Tonight was a geek night. I spent 3 hours on my Mac trying to install some new stuff, and i found interesting pieces of software i wanted to talk to you about :

• Quicksilver: i knew this one for a long time but i never tried it before. It’s a powerful and flexible application launcher. It supports plugins and skins, and you can really do a lot of thing with this gizmo. I instantly fell in love !
• Visor: this one is made by the same guy who made Quicksilver, it is a terminal console like the one found in quake. I don’t use the terminal so often but i really like the design of this one.
• Amua: I also discovered Last.fm tonight, so i tried the official clent for Mac. It is good to offer streaming directly without any need for a browser, but i don’t like to open the full Last.fm window to see what i am currently listening to. That’s where Amua comes handy. It’s a replacement player for Last.fm, it supports scrobbling and displays the current song when you hover the menu icon. But the really good point is that it plays music via iTunes, and that means Growl support, and the best of all : Subtle status display with the script i presented here some time ago !

I have been using ByteController on my Mac for quite a long time now, it controls well iTunes with both buttons in the menu bar and global shortcuts. It also supports Growl, but I lacked a permanent visual display of the song played, so I do not have to open iTunes to see the song name.

Yesterday I found a small program called SubtleStatus, it displays iTunes artist, song name and album in one of the corner of your screen. It supports transparency and is really unobtrusive. Default setup displays artist, song name and album one after each other, but it also supports AppleScript if you like to tweak things.

As I am also using Cog sometimes, I wanted Subtle to display Cog’s information instead of iTunes’ when it is paused or not running. I wrote a small AppleScript to handle the stuff :

Free… free cassé ! Fricassé ! Elle est énorme celle la !

C’est sur fond d’humour de surfeur décoloré que je pousse mon coup de gueule contre Free. Mes parents disposent d’un abonnement non dégroupé avec une freebox v3, jusqu’à il y a quelques mois tout allait bien, et depuis… Depuis pas moyen de synchroniser la freebox, le petit serpentin tourne, accélère, décélère. Mais bien plus étrange que les aléas de la connexion, j’ai trouvé une sorte de paliatif, disons peu commun : lorsque la freebox essaye de se synchroniser, je décroche le téléphone France Telecom et je compose un numéro, et là, miracle pyrotechnique, pendant que la tonalité se fait entendre, la freebox se synchronise. Magie, sorcellerie, vaudou ? Je ne saurais dire, mais en tout cas cela permet d’avoir internet par intermittence, en attendant de rebasculer chez Orange pour avoir une connexion stable…

Moralité, Free non dégroupé, saimal !

This afternoon, i was fooling around at my friend’s coco, and i was somehow curious abouthis media player. In fact the thing that bugged me was that the icons for media files : an orange foot. So he told me it was an all new media player called Gom Player, that it was free, and most important of all, that it has all the codecs built in. Wow.

I know for a long time that playing all types of video is a pain in the ass. I myself was a great fan of Media Player Classic, the best light-weight player by Gabest, but even if it’s a great player, you still have to install your own codecs. A few years back i had time to install each one of those codecs by myself, but now there are so much of them so i don’t have time to do that. It ended that i used the satsuki decoder pack, but with all those settings which you don’t understand, it offens create conflicts between codecs.

So i gave a try to Gom tonight, and well, i’m really amazed. Light-weight, goodlooking, skinnable (even if i really don’t care about that sort of stuff), all files play well (except a realmedia file, but who cares ?), subs are well shown… And most of all, my ATI remote wonder can control Gom without any special plugin ! That is awesome.

I know some of you will be surprised with me not using MPC anymore, especially those i converted to it, but Gom really is what we can call a killer-app !

C’est bien la Wii ça permet même de bloguer, par contre c’est fastidieux ! En tout cas le navigateur Opera version Wii est bien foutu, on peut même regarder des vidéos sur dailymotion ou écouter de la musique avec radio blog club

Je sais que beaucoup de personnes n’aiment pas (ou plus?) Winamp, surtout depuis la forte intégration de Windows Media Player dans Windows XP, ou alors parce que iTunes propose une médiathèque. N’empêche que je suis resté un inconditionnel de ce lecteur populaire des années 2000. Pratique et véloce, il sait se faire tout petit, si comme moi on aime le voir en haut de son écran en permanence plutôt que d’avoir une énorme fenêtre en plein milieu, mais il est aussi hautement configurable via une foultitude de plug-ins. Depuis la version 5 il dispose aussi d’une médiathèque très pratique (quoiqu’en dise les utilisateurs d’iTunes), qui permet de configurer des vues (ex: par genre) et de chercher en quelques secondes grâce à un filtre temps réel. Bref, ce player est la panacée ! Il n’empêche que jusqu’à ce matin j’avais encore un tout petit problème : les fichiers au format MPC (un format lossless) avec des tags APE. Certes ces fichiers ne sont pas nombreux mais j’en avais quelques uns. Le problème était le suivant : dans la médiathèque les informations des tags APE n’étaient pas récupérées correctement, et l’affichage et la recherche s’en trouvait altérés. Si vous me connaissez vous savez que de temps en temps j’essaye d’avoir ce que je veux COUTE QUE COUTE ! Et ce matin était un de ces moments là J’ai donc trouvé une version béta du plug-in in_mpc, développé par l’équipe de Winamp, et qui corrige cet affreux bug de tags APE. Bonheur ! Mes fichiers MPC passent enfin correctement dans ma médiathèque !

Je voulais faire un petit coup de pub pour un site génial que j’ai découvert hier, ça s’appelle OpenSubtitles.org et c’est une gigantesque base de données de sous-titres multilingues. Pour ceux qui aiment les films en VO, mais qui aiment aussi tout comprendre sans avoir à passer par le sous-titre français, on peut trouver les sous-titres anglais très facilement. En plus une fonction sur le site permet de prévisualiser le fichier de sous-titre (pour vérifier les timings par exemple).

En fait j’ai récemment décidé d’essayer de ne regarder que des films en anglais, et après avoir trouvé quelques sites un peu moisis j’ai enfin trouvé celui-là, qui est parfait

Suite à ma visite à l’hôpital de jeudi dernier, j’ai pu reprendre les cours ce matin. Reprise ma foi très difficile, l’option dans laquelle je me trouve étant comme par hasard l’option de la glande, en bref je ne vais rien foutre. D’autant plus que cet après-midi je devais passer une visite médicale du travail pour pouvoir reprendre mon stage chez France Telecom, visite passée avec succès d’ailleurs. Et comme demain je passe la journée à l’hôpital pour mon déplâtrage au bloc, je ne retourne en cours que mercredi. Les vacances sont donc bien finies, mais je ne suis pas mécontent, parce que 2 mois sans rien faire c’est un peu chiant.
